A day in the South of France

Today we arrived in Cannes, France. Home of the Cannes Film Festival. As soon as we got off the boat we met out tour guide, Ben from Liven Up! Tours. I found this tour, as well as my others, from Viator.com, a Trip Advisor company.

Ben first took us to Eze. In Eze (pronounced azay), we walked around and toured a perfume factory. There were beautiful views and some shops and restaurants. The perfume factory was interesting, but definitely aimed at tourists with a strong sales pitch. I enjoyed the perfume and tour, but did not purchase any. It is manufactured at this factory and factories in a few nearby cities.

Next, we took off for Monaco and Monte Carlo. On the way we passed Princess Grace Kelly’s crash site where she was killed. In Monaco we saw the Royal Palace and the cathedral where Princess Grace (and Prince Rainier) is buried. We also enjoyed the beautiful views.

Next, we took the route of the Formula 1 Grand Prix to the Monte Carlo Casino and saw the beautiful (and well-known) Hotel de Paris. This was definitely an area for the extremely wealthy. We went into the Casino lobby and there were a few (American) machines so we each played a few dollars to say we did it. To go further into the Casino required a strict dress code and it didn’t open until after 2pm. We headed out in more the Grand Prix route. The race was very recent (last week, I believe) so some of the bleachers we’re still in place.

Ben dropped us off back in Cannes and we found a bistro and had some wine and crepes. It was a warm (78 degrees) and overcast day but we had a good day.
