The Amalfi Coast & Pompeii

This post was written on 6/13/19 and posted on 6/14/19.

Another day, another guide named Francesco. This morning we ported in Napoli (Naples), the birthplace of Pizza. Today we toured the Amalfi Coastal towns of Postiano and Sorrento and then toured the Archaeological site of Pompeii. We did not have a private guide this time and had to share Francesco with 15 others. However, the group was pretty easy to travel with. We started out the furthest from Naples driving to Postiano. This is the most beautiful, winding, crazy drive. It is a cliff side drive with beautiful views full of large tour buses.

When we got to Postiano we grabbed an espresso and frozen lemon treat that was served inside a hollowed out lemon. Then we did some shopping. The clothing sold in stores here featured a lot of neutral colors and linens. Basically, I could buy a wardrobe here. We only had an hour, so it was just a bunch of window shopping.

Next, we headed back north to Sorrento, another town on the Amalfi coast. Sorrento is another gorgeous cliffside town. Here we also only had an hour. The Amalfi coast is known for its lemons. They are HUGE! They can be as large as a head. They are also known for their lemon treats, especially Limoncello. So Good. We went into a lemon store and they just kept feeding us lemon treats and drinks and they were all so good. We grabbed quick sandwiches from a deli before we met back up to head to Pompeii.

I have been looking forward to Pompeii since I booked this trip and it did not disappoint. We were dropping off with a Pompeiian tour guide and she did not disappoint. She is a native of Pompeii and her family has lived here for several generations. She has a passion for teaching people about Pompeii and how the town was before the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD. This place is truly remarkable. Archeologists are still in the process of uncovering it, but what they have uncovered shows so much. There were markets, ovens (same as the Pizza ovens today), beautiful homes with inlaid tile and painting, amphitheaters, and so much more. There were aqueducts, lead pipes, sidewalks, food storage, and flour mills. I was blown away by how advanced Pompeii was and the artifacts that were able to be uncovered, and that are being uncovered still. It was hot and exhausting, but the kids did so well, and I think they even learned a little bit.

After we arrived back in our port in Napoli, we figured we should get some pizza, since it is the birthplace and all. So we found a local restaurant and grabbed one to share.

This was a wonderful last day of our Mediterranean cruise. We port in Rome tomorrow!
